Malaria life cycle Flashcards
Malaria life cycle 1
An infected mosquito, acting as a vector, bites a human
Malaria life cycle 2
A plasmodium enters the bloodstream, and is carried to the liver cells
Malaria life cycle 3
Asexual reproduction occurs in the liver cells and thousands of daughter parasites are released
Malaria life cycle 4
Daughter parasites then move into the red blood cells, where they develop and replicate
Malaria life cycle 5
As many as 20 gametocytes will be released into the bloodstream when each red blood cell bursts
Malaria life cycle 6
Another mosquito bites an infected human and the gametocytes enter the mosquito
Malaria life cycle 7
Gametocytes mature into male and female gametes and sexual reproduction occurs in the mosquito
Malaria life cycle 8
The zygotes formed become motile and make their way to the mosquitos salivary glands. The mosquito can then infect another human host
