Mitosis Flashcards
1
Q
what is the centre bit called on a chromosome
A
centromere
2
Q
what happens in prophase
A
- chromosomes condense
- spindle fibres develop
- nuclear envelope disintergrates
- nucleolus dissapears
3
Q
what happens in metaphase
A
- chromosomes are visible as pairs
- they line up in the centre of the cell
4
Q
what happens in anaphase
A
- centromere divides into 2
- chromatids move to opposite ends of the cell
5
Q
what happens in telophase / cytokinesis
A
- chromosomes reach poles and become indistinct
- nuclear envelope reforms
- nucleolus reforms
6
Q
how do viruses replicate
A
- they attach to host cell with attatchment proteins
- then inject their nucleic acid into the host cell
- the host cells metabolic processes then replicate it
7
Q
what is meant by mitotic index
A
the ratio of cells undergoing mitosis to total number of cells
