2
Q

Why is cell division significant?

A

-livings things grow by producing more cells not b/c each cell increases in size
-repair of damaged tissue
-if cell get too big it cannot et enough nutrients into the cell and waste out of the cell

6
Q

before cell division occurs…

A

-cell replicates (copies) all of it’s DNA, so each daughter cell gets complete set of genetic information from parent cell
-each daughter cell is exactly like the parent cell - same kind and # of chromosomes as orginal cell

Q

Interphase

A

-period of cell growth and development
-DNA replication (copying) occurs during Interphase
-cells grows, carries out normal cell activites, replicates all other organelles
-cell spends most of it’s life in this phase

13
Q

Mitosis

A

-division of the nucleus into 2 nuclei; each with the same # of chromosomes
-occurs in all the somatic (body) cells

14
Q

Mitosis why

A

-so that each daughter cell can have a nucleus with a complete set of chromosomes

Q

Cell Cycle

A

-series of events cells go through as they grow and divide
-cell grows, prepares for division, then divides to form 2 daughter cells

16
Q

Order of Mitosis

A

Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase

17
Q

Prophase

A

-chromosomes coil up
-nuclear envelope disappears
-spindle fibers form

18
Q

Metaphase

A

-chromosomes line up in the middle of cell
-spindle fibers connect to chromosomes

19
Q

Anaphase

A

-chromosome copies divide
-spindle fibers pull chromosomes to opposite poles

20
Q

Telophase

A

-chromosomes uncoil
-nuclear envelope form
-2 new nuclei are formed
-spindle fibers diappears

21
Q

Cytokinesis

A

-division of the rest of the cell after the nucleus divides

22
Q

Animal cells cytokinesis

A

cytoplasm pinches in

23
Q

Plant cells cytokinesis

A

cell plate forms

24
Q

After cytokinesis what phase do cells go into?

A

back to Interphase to coutinue to divide

25
Q

Cell divisoin control

A
  • the DNA controls the cell division (all cell activty)
-some cell lose their ablity to control their rate of cell divsion (if DNA is damages)….this causes tumors
26
Q

Malignant tumors

A

-cells break lose and can invade and destroy healthy tissue in other parts of the body

27
Q

Benign Tumors

A

-are not cancerous
-don’t spread to other parts of the body
