Mitosis Flashcards
Cell Division
-process by which a cell divides into 2 new cells
Why is cell division significant?
-livings things grow by producing more cells not b/c each cell increases in size
-repair of damaged tissue
-if cell get too big it cannot et enough nutrients into the cell and waste out of the cell
Process Cell Division
Daughter Cell
-2 new cells off the parent cell
Parent cell
orginal cell
before cell division occurs…
-cell replicates (copies) all of it’s DNA, so each daughter cell gets complete set of genetic information from parent cell
-each daughter cell is exactly like the parent cell - same kind and # of chromosomes as orginal cell
Asexual Reproduction
reproduction by means of cell division
Chromatin
long, thread- like DNA in a non-dividing cell
-loose DNA in nucleus
Chromosome
doubled, coiled, short DNA in a dividing cell
-completed DNA bundle
DNA consists of 2 parts
Chromatid and Centromere
Somatic cells
-have the same kind and # of chromosomes
Interphase
-period of cell growth and development
-DNA replication (copying) occurs during Interphase
-cells grows, carries out normal cell activites, replicates all other organelles
-cell spends most of it’s life in this phase
Mitosis
-division of the nucleus into 2 nuclei; each with the same # of chromosomes
-occurs in all the somatic (body) cells
Mitosis why
-so that each daughter cell can have a nucleus with a complete set of chromosomes
Cell Cycle
-series of events cells go through as they grow and divide
-cell grows, prepares for division, then divides to form 2 daughter cells
