Evolution Flashcards
Adaptation
-any physical or behavioral change that helps an organism survive in it’s particular enviroment
Behavioral Adaptations
-changes how it acts based on the enviroment
ex. migration, hibernation
Mating Displays
-an organized performance which is done in order to attract a mate
-also can decide on dominance
Structural Adaptations
-the shapes that organisms take so that they can survive in their enviroment
Physical/ Chemical Adaptations
-changes within a species that may not be seen from the outside or at all
ex. special organs, toxins, immunities
Divergent Evolution
- one species divides and splits into 2 or more new species (diverages from one another)
-similar traits to original but both different
Convergent Evolution
-where species from very different origins develop a similar trait
Coevolution
-a change in one organism is triggered by changes in another organism
-needs to change because another species did (rely)
Mimicry
one species evoloves to be similar to another species; acts as benefit to one or both
-appearance,sound
Camoflauge
where a species evolves to look like their surroudings
Vestigial Traits
-biological structures that exsist but do not serve their original purpose

Genus
Species
Species
a group of organisms that share similar characteristics and can reproduce amoug themselves and produce fertile offspring
Fitness
ablity of individuals to survive long enough to reproduce
Punctuated Equilibrium
rapid evolution where the mutation of a few genes results in a populations suddenly exploding into many new species
Natural Selection
process where the organism with the traits best suited for the enviroment are more likely to survive and reproduce
Artifical Selection
selective breeding of plants or animals so that they have specific traits
Evolution
the overall change in inherited traits and characteristics over time
Taxonomy
the naming and groupoing of living things according to specific traits
