Miss communicating science Flashcards
why is it difficult to communicate science?
- about debate and contradictions (expected)
- truth is daughter of debate
- scientists never certain
science
assumes that we can never know truth
uncertainty expected
how scientists view uncertainty
no such thing as proof, just probability
leads to problems with decision making
risk and probability
how we perceive risk isn’t how its measured
people always overestimate risk
post normal science
science is becoming more sophisticated - narrower focues
language problems
people don’t understand scientific jargon
scientific culture
institutions - promotions
have to dumb down science
science and media
most people get info from tv, thus need to communicate effectively
if people were aware of research:
- political considerations
- economic considerations
- can be misunderstanding
- not considered relevant
understand the audience
use communicators to get message across
decision makers, public, gvt, interested public
education matters
more that went to uni voted remain in EU
young people more likely to go to uni - change dynamic of country
evolution/creationism
creationism isn’t about science, but is about people
smarter people more likely to display ideologically motivated reasoning
people select eveidence that agrees with them
false equivalence
logical fallacy when 2 opposing arguments appear logically equivalent when they’re not. not logical to give each argument equal weight
roughly how many scientists disagree
1/100
low info rationality
people are info consumers with limited benefits and time for processing and understanding info
people busy so want effortless solitions
