Intro to atmosphere Flashcards
how much energy does the equator receive compared to poles?
twice as much - due to sphere shape
Coriolis effect
turns winds in the N to the right
strength I greatest at high latitudes and smallest at equator
what are the doldrums?
air between pressures - low
what is the horse latitudes?
belt of calm air and sea occurring in both N and S hemispheres between trade winds and westerlies
polar front
warm and cold air meet. region of low pressure caused by collision of cold arctic air in polar cell and warm low latitude air in ferrel cells
what’s a rossby wave?
tell you what temps will be.
1 = one peak and one trough
can break and high pressure system goes low.
responsible for extreme weather.
polar vortex
plug hole. cold air drawn down. low pressure in central arctic is a sign of a strong vortex
gravity waves
large scale transport of warmer tropospheric air into stratosphere = weaker polar vortex = -AO
