Milgram's variations Flashcards
What is DETER RESPONSIBILITY?
- The teacher had a assistant who operated the shock generator and presses the switch for them/
What was the results compared to the baseline? - DETER RESPONSIBILITY
92.5%
What was the reason for high levels of obedience? - DETER RESPONSIBILITY
It meant that there was no disagreement or difficulty when operating the shock generator
What was the CHANGE IN LOCATION?
- The same experiment was carried out in a rundown office block in BridgePort
What was the results compared to the baseline? - CHANGE IN LOCATION?
- 47.5%
What was the reason for high levels of obedience? - CHANGE IN LOCATION
- Yale University is a prestigious university which would be unlikely to allowing anything unethical to happen
What is the LEARNER’S PRESENCE IN THE ROOM WITH THE SHOCK?
In one variation, the learner was physically
present in the room with the participant, so
he had to watch the learner be shocked. If
the learner refused to touch the shock plate
the participant had to force his hand down on
it
What was the results compared to the baseline? - LEARNER’S PRESENCE IN THE ROOM WITH THE SHOCK?
- 30%
What was the reason for high levels of obedience? - LEARNER’S PRESENCE IN THE ROOM WITH THE SHOCK?
- the participant may have though the leaner would do the same in their place
What was the EXPERIMENTER ABSENT?
Experimenter absent
In this variation, the experimenter was not in
he same room as the participant and all
communication between the participant and
experimenter was done via a telephone
What was the results compared to the baseline? - EXPERIMENTER ABSENT?
- 22.5%
What was the reason for high levels of obedience? - EXPERIMENTER ABSENT?
The experiment was repeated by Milgram himself among other psychologists, results are shown to be reliable
What is INCREASE THE NUMBER OF TEACHERS?
Another experiment used three teachers,
two of who were actors and so only one was
the real participant. They would behave as
though they were also being studied. The
first actor would drop out at 150v, the
second at 210v and then it was measured
when the participant would drop out.
What was the results compared to the baseline? - INCREASE THE NUMBER OF TEACHERS
- 10%
What was the reason for high levels of obedience? - INCREASE THE NUMBER OF TEACHERS
- Low levels - only one teacher was a real participant whereas the rest were actors. This means the actors are not experienced and may not know what they are doing.
