Milgram 1963 Ethics extended

Deception

A

AGAINST

  • (—) millgram deceived the participants by making them believe that they were causing harm to the learner when they were not
  • and that it was a fair draw for the participant and the learners roles
  • and that the purpose of the experiments was a study of memory and learning when in fact it was on obedience

JUSTIFIED

  • milligram was Justified to deceive participants on causing harm to participants as otherwise natural moral strain would not have taken place and the results would have been invalid
  • milligram was just a fun deceiving participants in the draw of roles as otherwise the Confederate learner would not have always been the learner compromising the study as it would be unable to collect relevant data
  • milligram was Justified in deceiving participants over the true Nature of the study as otherwise there would have been demand characteristics such as refusing to obey immediately that would have affected the studies validity

RIGHT TO WITHDRAW

A

AGAINST

  • Despite telling ppts they had the right to withdraw at the start of the study
  • Ppts felt they couldn’t due to the 4 prompts e.g. “ you mave no other choice, you must go on”

JUSTIFIED

  • Still told them they could at the start
  • they would not have been able to cause moral strain as the influence of moral strain on obedience is part of what the study is measuring

Consent

A

AGAINST

  • the true Nature of the study was a study of obedience and not memory and learning therefore no gram would not have been able to get consent for his actual study only his fake one

JUSTIFIED

  • he got presumtive consent from 14 psychology majors at Yale University that’s the believed only 0 to 3% would go to the max 450v
  • meaning that technically milligram had consent from the psychology Majors as they deemed it ok as they thouggt nobody would fully obey

Physical and Psychological harm

A

Against

  • the learner screened and shouted and begged for the participant to stop shocking them from the other room which may have caused stress and anxiety and psychological trauma
  • free participants had seizures one of which were hospitalized due to the anxiety and stress caused by the study

Justified

  • partisipants were debriefed afterwards and met Mr Wallace the Confederate learner to see that he was in fact ok ( they’re still may have been psychological damage present, this only lowered its effect)
  • a questionnaire a year after the study found that 80% agreed but it was good that they had partaken in the study meaning that they had nothing against the study and not too much harm was done to most of the ppts
