A

due to…

a failed state exists where the political and economic system has become so weak that the international government is no longer in control and cannot maintain security law or order

24
Q

mention facts about the failed state: Syria

A

-The civil war in Syria has contributed to its failure
-This civil war has neatly saved 500,000 lives and is displacing millions of Syrians to other countries as refugees
-Syria’s infrastructure has disintegrated
-the country is ethnically divided
-much of its failure has also been caused by nepotism (power to family and friends) and corruption- the economy is run by friends of the ruling family
-during privatisation, assets were transferred to friends and families
-many established large fortunes by illegal means

can it be argued that countries which have had civil war dont have a national identity?

why does Catalonia have a desire to separate from the rest of Spain?

A
  • it produces 20% of Spain’s Wealth

A
  • In 2015, pro-independent parties won a majority in regional elections
29

what are the arguments in favour of a separate Scotland

A

-people who live in scotland will decide what happens here

-will be able to decide how thier money from their oil and gas industry should be spent, instead of having to share this with the rest of the UK

-an independent scotland would be a full and equal member of NATO, UN, EU thus greater global infleunce

-more money could be spent on renewables

-spend saved money on healthcare and education

30
Q

what are the arguments against scotland being separate

A

-without the UK there would not be enough money for public services without raising taxes

-revenue from oil and gas is unpredictable

-Scotland has strong cultural and economic links with the UK

-economically stronger with being part of the UK

-It would be difficult for scotland to rejoin the EU as an independent country and if they did, they would have little influence because scotland is a small country

-independence may mean important businesses may move

31
Q

what was the turnout of the 2014 scottish referendum

A

independence was rejected
