About 1000 years, from the end of the Roman Empire in AD 476 to 1485. Almost contant war during the Norman Conquest.

What system of land ownership was used by the Normans ?
Feudalism - king gave land to his lords in return for help in wars. Landowners had to send certain number of men to serve in the army. Some peasants had land but most were serfs. The same system was used in the south of scotland.

Smaller population so less need to grow crop. Labour shortage so peasant demanded higher wages. New social classes appeared including owners of large area of land (gentry) . People left countryside to leave in towns. Growning wealth in town led to the development of a strong middle class.

Many in the Pale died so the area controlled by the British became smaller.

Were called for the king to consult his nobles when the king needed to raise money.
How was parliament made in the middle Ages?
Numbers attending parliament increased and two separate parts were established. House of Lords with nomility, great landowners and Bishops. The house of common was comprised of knight, who were smaller landowners, and people from town and cities who were elected by a small part of the population.

How did the legal system develop ?
Judges became independent from the government. In England, common law was establish by a process of precedent. In Scotland, the system developped differently and laws were codified.

By 1400 all official documents were written in English. Before then Noblemen spoke Norman French and the peasant continued to speak Anglo Saxon.

England was an important trading nation. English wool became and important export. People came to England to work : Weavers from France, Engineers from Germany, Glass manufacturers from Italy and canal builders from Holland.
