28th June 1914 when Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assasinated.
When was the Battle of the Somme?
In July 1916 - 60,000 British soldiers were killed on the first day alone.
When was Ireland partitioned?
In 1913 a Home Rule bill was introduced in parliament but it was opposed by the Protestants in the North of Ireland.
In 1916 there was and uprising (the Easter Rising) of the Irish Nationalist who did not want to wait until the end of the war. The leaders were executed. A guerilla betwen the Irish Police and the British Army followed.
In 1921 a peace treaty was signed and in 1922 Ireland was partitioned. Ireland became a republic in 1949 .

When did Churchill become prime minister?
In 1940. He refused to surrender Britain to the Nazis and was an inspirational leader to the British people. He lost the general election in 1945 but returned as PM in 1951.
What is the Battle of Britain?
In the summer of 1940 the German waged and air campaingn against Britain, but Britain resisted with their fighter planes (spitfire and hurricane, made in Britain)
Although the German lost they continued to bomb London and other cities. These were called Blitz.
When was pearl Harbour?
December 1941 - the Japanese bombed the american base after the defeated the British and occupied Burma, threatening India.
When did Hitler attack the soviet union?
In 1941 - Hitler attempted the largest invasion in history by attacking the Soviet Union. Huge loss on both sides which proved pivotal.
Who discovered Penicillin?
Alexander Flemming in 1928. By the 1940s in was in mass production and Fleming worn the Nobel Prize for medicine in 1945.
Who turned Penicillin into a usable drug?
Howard Florey and Ernst Chain.
Who was part of the allied powers during WWI?
Briain, France, Russia, Japan, Belgium Serbia and later Romania, Grace, Italy and the USA. The whole of the British Empire was involved in the conflict.
Who was part of the allied during WWII?
Britain, France, Poland, Anstralia, New Zealand, Canada and the Union of South Africa. Fighting agains the Axis powers: facist Italy and Germany and the Empire of Japan.
