Justice of the peace court - minor criminal cases
Sherriff court - serious crime - heard by a sheriff or a sherriff with a jury.
High Court - murders with judge and jury. 15 members.
Magistrates and Justice of the peace court
Members are of the local community in England Wales and Scotland. They are usually unpaid and do not need legal qualifications. They need training and are supported by legal advisers. They decide the sentence and verdict.
In Ireland cases are heard by a distict Judge or Deputy district judge who is paid and trained.
County Courts
deal with a wide range of civil disputes - get money back, personal injury, family matters, breaches of contract and divorce.
In Scotland most of these are heard by the sheriff court.
More serious cases heard by High court in England, Northern Ireland and Wales, and by the Court of Session in Edinburgh
