Trial by local jury and trial by ordeal
Who were the jury made up of?
People who knew the accused and people who did not.
What would happen if there was no clear evidence?
The jury would choose based on who they knew best and looked most honest.
What was the oath that the accused would take called?
Compurgation

- Priest is always present
- Must fast for 3 days
- Mass is heard

They walk 3 paces and if the wound is festering after 3 days, they are guilty.

What happens in the blessed bread trial?
The priest prays whilst eating bread. If guilty, they will choke.

Men
What happens in the hot water trial?
An object is placed in hot water, which they have to pick up. If wound is festering after 3 days, they are guilty

They are lowered into water and if they sink, they are innocent.
