Microscopy Flashcards
What is the purpose of a compound magnification system?
Further enlarges the sample through magnifying the magnification
What is an isotropic material?
A material that has the same optical properties in all directions
What is an anisotropic material
A material where the optical properties vary with orientation of the incoming light. Most solids
What is the purpose of polarized light microscopy?
Causes divided light rays to interact to convert unpolarized light to polarized light. Provides information on absorption colour and optical path boundaries
What is birefringence?
The division of light into ordinary and extraordinary rays
What is the difference between phosphorescence and fluorescence?
Phosphorescence has long-lived emissions while fluorescence stops when radiation excitation stops
