Anthropology and odontology Flashcards
What is cortical bone?
The hard, smooth and compact outer layer of bone
What is trabecular bone?
The sponge like inner bone layer
What is the medullary cavity?
The centre of long bones containing bone marrow
What are the main bone detection methods?
Radars, probes and dogs to detect the gases produced by decomposition
What general feature of the pelvis can be used to determine gender?
Male pelvis is larger and more robust while the female pelvis is broader with specific pregnancy traits
How does the pelvis ventral arc differ between males and females?
It is present in females but not in males
How does the pelvis ischio-pubic ramus differ between males and females?
It is flat and thin in males and wider in females
How does the pelvis subpubic concavity differ between males and females?
It is deep in females and only slight in males
What age range does the major epiphyses fuse?
13-18
What feature of pubic symphysis and the cartilage between the sternum and ribs can be analysed to determine age?
The amount of fusion between the bones as they ossify at a predictable rate
What features of the skull can be analysed to give an indication of ancestry?
General shape of the eye orbitals, nasal aperture and dentition
What can be analysed to indicate height?
Length of the long bones with understanding of the sex and ancestry
What quadrants are teeth organised into?
Upper right, lower right, upper left and lower left
What is the difference between the buccal and lingual side of a tooth?
Buccal is the side facing the cheek and lingual is the side closest to the tongue
