Microscope Flashcards
Magnification:
makes objects look larger (unlimited)
Resolution:
the ability to see two items as separate and distinct (limited)
Resolving power:
measure of clarity of an object
Refraction:
bending of light when it changes (air or oil)
Transmission:
light rays pass through an object
Fluorescence:
Use of UV light, absorbs light at one wavelength and emits light at a different wavelength instantaneously
Absorption:
Light rays are taken in by an object and absorbed
Resolving power (Resolution):
Photon wavelength / (2 NA)
- Numerical aperture = light gathering ability of a lens
Light microscopy:
Photons scattered by objects for visualization
Subtypes: 5
Electron microscopy:
Electrons scattered by objects for visualization
Subtypes: SEM and TEM
Subtypes of Light Microscopy:
- bright-field
- phase contrast
- differential interference contrast
- dark-field
- fluorescence
Contrast:
differences in intensity/color against background
