Microscope Flashcards
Light microscope
Produces magnified images by focusing visible light rays
Produces clear images of objects out of a magnification of about 1000 times
Cant produce clear images of objects smaller than 2 micrometers
Microscope
A device that produces magnified images of structures that are to small to see with the unaided eye
Exp. of a light microscope
Compound microscope
Compund microscope
Allows light to pass through the specimen
Uses 2 lenses to form an image
Techniques and procedures to make light microscopes more useful.
Chemical stains (dyes) Fluorescent dyes
Chemical stains
Show specific structures of a cell (blues and reds)
Fluorescent dyes
Have been combined with video cameras and computer processing to product moving 3d images of a cell movement
Electron microscope
Produce magnified images by focusing beams of electrons instead of light.
Require a vacuum to operate so you must use preserves and dehydrated specimen (no living cell)
Types of electron microscope
Transmission electron microscope (TEM)
Scanning electron microscope
(SEM)
Transmission electron microscope
Shine a beam of electrons through a thin specimen gives details inside the cell
Scanning electron microscope
Scan a narrow beam of electrons back and forth across the surface of a specimen
Produce realistic, dramatic, 3d images of the surface object
