Microbiome and Ageing Flashcards
What is the microbiome?
The genome of all the microorganisms living in and on all vertebrates.
Why is the gut microbiome important?
Malfunction can cause diabetes and IBS.
What are short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs)?
Products of anaerobic fermentation of dietary fiber and resistant starch, and to a lesser extent of proteins.
What are some functions of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs)?
Energy, protection, insulin secretion, and DNA homeostasis.
what are the 2 types of starch?
Rapidly digested
Resistant starch
What are the 2 types of fibre?
Soluble and insoluble.
What are the best prebiotic foods?
Fibre
Starch
Raw legumes.
What kids of factors influence the microbiome?
Diet and medication
Genetics
Geography
Age and Sex
Does the gut microbiome change during ageing?
The microbiome should change with age to help you cope and stay healthy.
Why does the microbiome change with age?
Microbes which were once beneficial are now toxic
Change in diet.
Decreased levels of fibre lead to chronic imflammation.
Why is the gut microbiome more vulnerable with ageing?
Because permeability of the gut decreases with age which results in inflammation?
What is the function of phenols within the gut microbe?
Positively correlate with increased frailty.
What is the function of indoles
Positively associated with improved physical function.
