Apoptosis and senescence Flashcards
What is apoptosis?
A form of cell death that is executed in response to defined external stimuli or to massive DNA damage.
What is the function of p53 in the cell?
Activates either senescence or apoptosis.
What is p53 released in response to?
DNA damage.
In which ways can apoptosis be achieved?
Glucocorticoid exposure.
Cytokine withdrawal.
Antigen receptor crosslinking.
Death-receptor ligation.
Cell detachment.
What is cell senescence?
A permanent and irreversible arrest of cell proliferation.
When does a cell go into senescence?
Uncapped telomeres or otherwise not sufficiently repaired DNA damage.
What happens with senescence with ageing?
It increases which changes net tissue function.
How is senescence induced?
Senescence is a cellular stress response triggered by diverse stressors, including the oncogene activation tumour suppressor mechanism.
What effect does senescence have on tumour formation.
Can act as both a suppressor and a promotor.
What is secondary senescence?
Senescence can be transmitted to neighbouring cells, this is a precautionary mechanism.
