Brain ageing Flashcards
What are interneurons?
Form all the neural wiring within the CNS.
What are motoneurons?
carry signals from the CNS to muscles and glands.
What does it mean if a neuron is multipolar?
Multipolar neurones have many processes originating from the cell body.
Which neurones are multipolar?
Interneurons and motoneurons.
What is the function of sensory neurones?
Carry messages from the body’s sense
receptors to the CNS.
What happens to the brain as we age?
Atrophy, brain matter decreases.
What is the annual rate of loss of hippocampal volume loss?
1.6% per year.
What is the annual rate of loss of hippocampal volume loss in Alzheimer’s?
4%.
Why is the hippocampus important in dementia?
Stores short term memory.
What is vacuolation?
Puts holes in neurones.
What is dementia?
Clinical syndrome caused by neurodegeneration.
What are the pathological hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease?
- Amyloid or Neuritic plaques (NP)
- Neurofibrillary tangles (NFT)
