Microbiology Flashcards
What are the microbial causes of infection
Bacteria
Virus
Fungi
Parasites
Prions
What are prions?
Proteins with no functions that live on the surface of our brain which causes problems if they accumulate
What are sterile body sites?
Body parts where microbes are not found typically deep within the body and well protected
What are sterile organs?
Brain
Blood
Liver
Heart
What is non sterile
Oesophagus lungs intestine
What are common specimens for bacterial cultures
Mid stream specimen of urine
Sputum
CSF
Blood
Faeces
What bacterial culture is normally detected in MSSU?
UTI
What common bacterial culture is detected in sputum?
Lower respiratory tract infection
What bacterial culture is commonly found in throat swabs?
Tonsillitis
What common bacterial culture is found in CSF?
Meningitis
What common bacterial culture specimen is found in blood tests?
Sepsis
What common specimen for bacterial culture is found in faeces?
Infectious diarrhoea for example salmonella
How are microscopes useful in diagnosing?
Viruses don’t appear up on microscopes.
Different stains can be used to identify different microbes and different types of bacteria.
You can identify the different white blood cells present in the sample
How can you tell if an infection is viral or bacterial using a microscope?
Viral infection would have more Lymphocyte and a bacterial infection will have more polymorphs
Viruses don’t show up on microscopes
What are three ways we can detect viruses from clinical samples?
Molecular methods
antigen detection
virtually obsolete methods
