Microanatomy of the Vascular System Flashcards
Arteries are denoted to be what colour?
Red
Veins are denoted to be what colour?
Blue
Pulmonary arteries are denoted to be what colour?
Blue
Pulmonary veins are denoted to be what colour?
Red
What are the four functions of blood vessels?
Distribution of blood
Gas exchange
Solute transfer
Haemostasis / inflammation
All vessels of the cardiovascular system can be described in terms of three layers. What are they?
Tunica intima Tunica media Tunica externa (adventitia)
What does “vaso vasorum” mean?
Vessels of the vessel
Describe the components of the Tunica Intima (4)
Endothelium
Basa lamina of endothelium
Loose connective tissue
Internal elastic lamina
Describe the components of the Tunica Media (3)
Smooth muscle
Connective tissue
External elastic lamina
Describe the components of the Tunica Externa (adventitia) (3)
Irregular connective tissue
Vaso vasorum
Lymphatics / nerves
What is the histology of endothelium?
Simple squamous epithelium
What does NO do in blood vessels?
Vasodilation
Blood pressure depends on two things - what are they?
Cardiac Output
Peripheral Resistance
What does Resistance depend on? Two things
Blood Viscosity
Dimensions of vessel
Which blood vessel has the highest blood pressure?
The Aorta (biggest artery)
Which set of blood vessels has the lowest blood pressure?
Veins
In which set of blood vessels is there the biggest change in blood pressure?
Arterioles
Which set of blood vessels have the smallest diameter?
Capillaries
What are the three types of capillary?
Continuous
Fenestrated
Discontinuous
Of the three types of capillary - what is the most common?
Continuous capillary
Describe the structure of Fenestrated capillaries
Found in tissues with high exchange function. Endothelium has “pores” for exchange called Fenestrations
Describe the structure of Discontinuous capillaries
Found in tissues with high cell and molecular exchange. Physical gaps are found between endothelial cells
Structurally, how are veins different from arteries? 3 differences
- No internal elastic lamina
- Thinner tunica media
- Presence of valves to prevent backflow
Do arteries have valves?
No
Do lymphatic vessels have valves?
Yes
What are the three layers of the heart?
Endocardium
Myocardium (heart muscle)
Epicardium
