Gross Anatomy of Lungs and Mediastinum Flashcards
The thoracic cavity comprises 3 compartments - what are they called?
Two pulmonary cavities (lungs)
A central mediastinum (everything including heart but the lungs)
What is the name given to the covering of the surface of the lung?
Visceral pleura
What is the name given to the covering of the pulmonary cavity?
Parietal pleura
Where does the Parietal pleura and Visceral pleura meet?
Hilum of the lung
What lies in the space between Parietal and Visceral pleura?
Pleural fluid
Where is there more space between the Parietal and Visceral pleura around the lungs?
At the costodiaphragmatic recess
Where is the Lung apex located?
Extends up above the clavicles
What is the Costal surface of the lungs?
Surface in contact with ribs
What is the Diaphragmatic surface of the lungs?
Surface in contact with diaphragm
What is the Lingula?
A process of left superior lobe that extends below the cardiac notch
Which lung lobe is smaller - Left or Right?
Left lobe
The right lung has two fissures and three lobes - what are they called?
Horizontal and Oblique fissure
Superior right, medial right, inferior right lobe
The left lung has one fissure and two lobes - what are they called?
Oblique fissure
Superior left and inferior left lobe
On the posterior aspect of the lungs, can you view the Horizonal fissure of the right lobe?
No, the horizontal and oblique fissure meet at the back
At the hila, the pleura hangs down and forms a ligament - what is it called?
Pulmonary ligament
What are the 3 main structures of the Hila?
Principle bronchus
Pulmonary artery
Pulmonary vein
Where is the Pulmonary artery in the Left and Right lung lobes located?
Right = Anteriorly Left = Superiorly
RALS
*with respect to bronchus
Superiorly and posteriorly - what are the boundaries of the Mediastinum?
Superiorly = Thoracic inlet Inferiorly = Diaphragm
What are the three divisions of the INFERIOR Mediastinum?
Anterior mediastinum
Middle mediastinum
Posterior mediastinum
What divides the SUPERIOR and INFERIOR parts of the mediastinum? What is the reference level for it
Thoracic plane, at the:
- Manubrio-sternal joint
- 2nd costal cartilage
- T4/T5 disc
What are the three branches of the Aortic arch?
Brachiocephalic
Left common carotid artery
Left subclavian artery
Which part of the Mediastinum is the heart found in?
Middle mediastinum of Inferior mediastinum
