Micro of Perio Diseases Flashcards
describe chronic periodontitis
slowly progressing, usually in adults can happen earlier
sporadic, detectable only be observing damage, most puts have mild to moderate disease, not all site equally effected
describe aggressive periodontitis
begins early usually in adolescence and young adults, rapidly progressing, site specific patten of destruction (LAP)
whats the primary defense against bacteria in the sulcus
neutrophils
how does inflammation correlate with bacterial activity
inflammation tries to keep microbes under control but it provides nutrients to bacteria thus allowing bacteria to suppress immune system and severe inflammation can ultimately cause damage to host
if damage to host occurs bc of inflammation what is this considered
NON reversible = periodontitis
if inflammation does not cause damage to host what is this considered
reversible= gingivitis
what does sulcular fluid provide
a constant supply of nutrients to bacteria
what do tissue invasive bacteria do
promotes inflammation and perhaps if deep enough (close to bone) prolongs osteoclastic activity, blocks osteoblastic activity and results in bone loss
how can bacteria invade host cells
by evading host defenses thus chronic reoccurring infections
and obtaining nutrients
by stimulating autophagy
how do commensal bacteria overgrow and invade the host
pathogenic species subvert host defenses enabling overgrowth of commensals
describe the ecology of periodontal pockets
about 700 dif species (by DNA methods), GRAM NEG AND GRAM POS!
anaerobic or microaerophilic
proteolytic
particular species associated w certain diseases
are there true pathogens that cause disease or do commensals just turn pathogenic?
studies suggest their are pathogens that cause disease and are not present in health
and that pathogen and commensals work together to cause disease
what are the 3 microbes of the RED COMPLEX- consistently found in chronic disease
P gingivalis
T forsythia
T denticola
what are some other species considered to be chronic to disease
AA,
P intermedia, C rectus, S noxia
Role of uncultivated species in periodontitis?
many uncultivated species associate with chronic period, GRAM pos may be important
