Power
A capacity that A has to influence the behavior of B so that B acts in accordance with A’s wishes
Formal Power
Is established by an individual’s power in an organization; conveys the ability to coerce or reward, from formal authority, or from control of information
Personal Power
influence derived from an individual’s characteristics
Types of Personal Power
Expert Power: influence based on special skills or knowledge
Referent Power: influence based on identification with a person who has desirable resources or personal traits
Power Tactics
Begin with soft tactics that rely on personal power, use hard tactics that rely on formal power if soft tactics fail. Upward, downward, lateral influence
Sexual Harassment
Unwelcome advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of sexual nature.

Quid pro quo
Hostile work environment: reasonable person
How can managers avoid legal liabilities with sexual harassment?
- written SH policy
- ensure employees will not counter retaliation for complaints
- investigate every complaint
- make sure offenders are disciplined or terminated
