Mettalurgy Exam 1 Flashcards
Three most important Gases
Nitrogen, Hydrogen, Oxygen
What is a Slip band. what will happen if subjected to multiple slip bands
When a group of atoms slide past one another on slip lines in the crystal structure.
multiple slip bands cause plastic deformation/ cause plastic deformation
Why is an exenstometer used in Tensile Testing
to test for elongation.
What is a crystal Stucture
The arragement/formation of atoms, ions, or molecules forming in grains that make up metals
A proccess used to extracted ores to for post processing.
Cruhsing
Heating up ores to remove impurities using coal or coke to get them to a pure state. Purfiaction method
Smelting. (Purification of ores into metals)
What is destructive DIstalltion
A procces where a material ( usually coal) is heated with limited oxgygne to remove impurities. used to produce coke
How does carbon contne t affect steel
lower more ductility less hard more easy to machine and weld.
Different types of Stainless steel
Ferritic( east maount of cabron moslty iron). Austenititic ( high chromium so high corrosion resistance. Martensitic.
why is mid carbon steel hard to weld
Due to the hydrogen content causing cracks in the weld. use low hydrogen fillers
Why is high carbon steel hard to weld
Also due to large maounts of cracks appearing. use pre heating procces
what percentage C is low carbon steel?
0.05 %-0.35 %
What is Distillation
A purification process where metals are heated just above their boiling point to turn the pure part into vapors and leave the impurities behind. the metals are then condensed and leave the impurities behind.
Electrolytic Refining.
Define a technique used for the purification of metals with the process of Electrolysis. A purification process where two metal rods or electrodes are placed into a bath of an electrolyte and purified using Electrolysis. Two rays/rods one cathode one anode. both submerged in a bath containing impure salts. the cations gains electrons while the anion loses eclectrons. anode oxidation cathode reduction
Zone Refining
A process where a crystal is purified by heating and moving through a rod. The heated part or “molten zone” moves through a long rod. the impurities move through the rod, while the pure metal remains at the start of the rod.
