!!! METHODS OF PRACTISE Flashcards
1
Q
What are the methods of practise?
A
- Massed Practice
- Distributed Practice
- Fixed Practice
- Varied practice.
2
Q
What is massed practise?
A
- Massed practise involves practise sessions with short or no rest intervals
- Used for discrete skills of short duration, or highly motivated performers with good fitness
- Used to simulate elements of fatigue and groove skills
E.g. basketball players practising their shooting by doing drills which involve many shots from different positions around the ‘key’.
3
Q
What is distributed practise?
A
- Distributed practise involves short practise sessions with regular rest intervals
- Used with continuous skills, or beginners with low fitness or motivation
- Used to allow performer to receive feedback in rest intervals, maintains motivation and is good for complex and dangerous skills
E.g. swimmer swims a width and then has a rest while the teacher gives feedback.
4
Q
What is fixed practise?
A
- Fixed practise involves repeating a skill in the same environment, known as a drill
- Used with closed skills that require specific movement patters to become overlearned, in events where conditions never change
- Used to allow skills to become automatic
E.g. discus thrower practices in the discus circle, using the same weight implement.
5
Q
What is varied practise?
A
- Various practise involve practising the same skill in a variety of environments
- Used with open skills, practice conditions must be as realistic as possible
- Used to develop long-term memory which performer can draw on, and a performers perceptual and decision-making skills
E.g. small sided game in football, where performer can work on passing and positional play.
