!!! CLASSIFICATION OF SKILLS Flashcards
1
Q
What is the muscular involvement continuum?
A
- Gross skills involve large muscle groups which are not very precise
E.g. shot put - Fine skills are intricate movements using small muscle groups which tend to be precise, with high levels of hand-eye coordination
E.g. rifle shooting.
2
Q
What is the environmental involvement continuum?
A
- Open skills are affected by the environment which is constantly changing so movements have to continually be adapted (perceptual skill)
E.g. a pass in football - Closed skills are not affected by the environment, as it is predictable so the performer knows what to do and when
E.g. javelin throw.
3
Q
What is the continuity involvement continuum?
A
- Discrete skills are brief, well-defined actions that have a clear beginning and end
E.g. a tennis serve - Serial skills are a number of discrete skills that are linked together to make a new and complex movement
E.g. triple jump - Continuous skills have no clear beginning or end, the end of one cycle is the beginning of the next, the skill is repeated
E.g. cycling
4
Q
What is the pacing continuum with examples?
A
- Self paced skills occur when the the rate of action is controlled by the performer
E.g. tennis serve - Externally paced skills are controlled by the environment and are not paced by the performer
E.g. receiving a pass in football.
5
Q
What is the difficulty continuum with examples?
A
- Simple skills are straightforward with few subroutines requiring few decision
E.g. sprinting - Complex skills are complicated and can be broken down into many subroutines require many decisions E.g. a tennis serve.
6
Q
What is the organisation continuum (low-high)
with examples?
A
- Low organisation skills are easy and uncomplicated, used to practise better technique, sub routines easy to separate
E.g. swimming strokes - High organisational skill has many sub-routines which are linked together to make this skill, and cannot be broken down and practiced
E.g. cartwheel.
