GUIDANCE Flashcards
1
Q
What are the types of guidance?
A
- Verbal.
- Visual.
- Mechanical.
- Manual.
2
Q
What is verbal guidance?
A
- Verbal guidance should be provided by coach or significant other
- It is used to describe and explain how to perform an activity
- It is often used alongside visual guidance
3
Q
What are the advantages and disadvantages of verbal guidance?
A
Advantages:
- Can reinforce good movements and identify errors to be corrected
- Can hold the attention of the performer and be used to motivate
- Useful for autonomous learners who need skill refinement and understand complex sporting vocab.
Disadvantages:
- Can lead to ‘information overload’
- If guidance is inaccurate, skills will be hindered
- Cognitive learners may not understand complex sporting vocab.
4
Q
What is visual guidance?
A
- Demonstrations can be used to help a learner
- A coach should highlight key points of the movement
- The demonstration must be accurate.
5
Q
What are the advantages and disadvantages of visual guidance?
A
Advantages:
- Easy to create a mental picture
- Skill can be seen at different stages
- Encourages observational theory
Disadvantages:
- If demonstration is incorrect, bad habits could form
- Coach may not be able to show accurate demonstration
- Visual representation may be unclear or too quick.
6
Q
What is manual and mechanical guidance?
A
- Mechanical and manual guidance involves physical support by another person
E.g. a twisting belt in gymnastics - It may involve a performer being physically directed by another person
E.g. guiding a performer’s hands in a golf swing.
7
Q
What are the advantages and disadvantages of manual and mechanical guidance?
A
Advantages:
1. Helps with confidence and sense of safety
2. Can give a kinaesthetic feel
3. Can be used to isolate skill action
E.g. holding a float to only practise leg kick in swimming
Disadvantages:
- Performer may become reliant
- Can lead to false kinaesthesis
- Could negatively affect motivation and cause negative transfer.
