clinical presentation of methemoglobinemia?
A
cyanosis, pulse oximetry saturation about 85%, dark chocolate covered blood, maybe lethargic seizures, or even death if methemoglobin levels are >70%

What causes methemoglobinemia?
A
exposure to oxidizing substances (dapson, nitrates, local and topical anesthetics

what is seen on laboratory findings of methemoglobinemia?
A
saturdation gap >5% difference between oxygen saturation on pulse ox and ABG. normal PaO2

what is a co-oximeter?
A
measures the presence of methemoglobin.

Treatment of methemoglobin
A
if level is >20% then need to give methylene blue to help reduce agent.
may also need blood transfusion or exchange transfusion.
