Metabolism and altered endocrine function - patho Flashcards
What is the endocrine system
a group of organs that produce, store, and secrete chemical messengers
What do hormones do
maintain homeostasis by causing physiological effects in the body
What does the hypothalamus do
receives signals and decides if hormones need to be stimulated or inhibited to maintain homeostasis (coordinator)
What does the pituitary gland do
releases or inhibits tropic hormones (master gland)
What gland is involved in all hormone secretion sequences
pituitary gland
What are the three parts of a healthy endocrine function
correct hormone level, enough blood, working receptors
What does the negative feedback system do
maintains homeostasis by keeping hormone levels within a certain range
Down-regulation
the act of decreasing the number and sensitivity of cell receptors to a hormone in order to decrease the hormone level
Up-regulation
the act of increasing the number of cell receptors and receptor sensitivity in order to increase the hormone level
Primary disorder
dysfunction of the endocrine gland itself
Secondary disorder
dysfunction cause by the pituitary gland
Tertiary disorder
dysfunction caused by the hypothalamus
What is hormone deficiency caused by
destruction of the endocrine gland
What is hormone excess caused by
overproduction of a hormone by the endocrine gland
What is hormone resistance caused by
defective hormone action at the cell receptor site
