Q

How does elevated hydrostatic pressure cause edema

A

excess water in the bloodstream pushing water out of the bloodstream into interstitial and intracellular spaces

Q

How does diminished osmotic pressure cause edema

A

a low amount of solutes in the bloodstream, keeps fluid in the ISF/ICF spaces, and does not pull fluid back into the bloodstream

Q

What is third spacing

A

when fluids become hidden in body cavities normally free of fluids

Q

What complications can third spacing cause

A

decreased heart and lung function due to a decrease in space to expand, fluid surrounds organs and interferes with functioning
