Merging self & other Flashcards
looking glass-self
develop self-concept through interactions with others
Sociometer theory
Sociometer plays important role in regulating an individual’s self-esteem and shaping their SoCal behaviours. It also underscores the idea that humans are inherently social creatures, ans our self-esteem and emotions are closely tied to our social interactions and connections with others.
Self-expansion theory
Individuals are motivated to seek out and engage in activities that allow them to extend their self-concept and personal identity
Link of self-expansion theory with relationships
People are drawn to relationships that offer opportunities for personal growth and self-expansion.
Relationship between liking and personal disclosure
- we like people who share personal information with us more, but we also like people after sharing personal information more.
Evidence from fast friends experiment: intimate questions resulted in greater feelings of closeness
Keys ideas of the intimacy process model
- disclosure is key to intimacy so is the response to disclosure and the response to the response
- intimacy is a feedback loop
- interpretive lens: what matters is if we feel cared for and understood. Not if parter did actually care and understand
What are the four classic attachment styles
- secure
- anxious-avoidant: caregivers are unresponsive or dismissive. Children learn to suppress their emotions and rely on themselves for comfort. May appear independent and self-reliant but often struggle with intimacy
- anxious-ambivalent: care givers are inconsistent. Clinginess and difficulty exploring the environment. Very dependent of caregivers and difficulty calming themselves down. Adult with strong desire for intimacy but fear rejection
- disorganized: confused and contradictory behaviours.
