What is a mental skills training program?
A program which is structured and consistent practice of psychological skills.
What are the general 3 phases of a mental training program?
- Education
- Acquisition (athletes effectively apply mental skills)
- Practice
What is a goal?
A target or object the people strive to attain.
What is goal setting?
The practice of establishing desirable objects for one’s actions.
What are 3 types of goals?
- Outcome
- Performance
- Process
What are some characteristics of a good goal?
SMART, positively-phrased, reviewed, made public
Why is being relaxed important?
Because excessive muscular tension interferes with the execution of skills.
What are 2 categories of relaxation?
- Muscle-to-mind
2. Mind-to-muscle
What does muscle to mind relaxation focus on?
Releasing physical tension. E.g. Massage or breathing exercises.
What does mind to muscle relaxation focus on?
Efferent nerve control to release cognitive anxiety. E.g. Meditation and autogenic training.
What is imagery?
Using one’s senses to re-create an experience in the mind.
What is a polysensory experience?
Involves all relevant senses (more realistic)
What is an external imagery experience?
You see the image from outside your body as if you are watching yourself.
What is an internal imagery experience?
You see the image behind your own eyes from your own body.
Why is imagery beneficial?
People can practice skills without physical training or a competitive environment.
