Mental health definition
“The successful adaptation to stressors from the internal or external environment, evidenced by thoughts, feelings and behaviors that are age-appropriate and congruent with local and cultural norms.”
Mental illness
“A maladaptive response to stressors from the internal or external environment. Evidenced by thoughts, feelings or behaviors that are incongruent with the local and cultural norms and interfere with the individuals social, occupational or physical functioning.”

General adaptation syndrome

1) alarm reaction stage
Fight or flight initiated
2) stage of resistance
The individual uses physiological responses of the alarm reaction stage as a defense in an attempt to adapt to the stressor
3) stage of exhaustion
Occurs when there’s a prolonged exposure to the stressor to which the body has become adjusted. The adapted energy is depleted and the individual can no longer draw from the resources from the first two stages.
Immediate response to stressors
Stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system
Sustained response to stressors
Prolonged period of stress, promotes susceptibility to many diseases
Anxiety
Diffuse apprehension that is vague in nature and is associated with feelings of uncertainty and helplessness
Grief
Subjective state of emotional, physical and social response to the loss of a valued entity. Real or perceived.
Adaptation
Determined by the extent to which thoughts, feelings and behaviors interfere with an individuals function.
