Community mental health centers act
Called for the construction of comprehensive community mental health centers, the cost of which would be shared by federal and state governments
Deinstitutionalization
- the closing of state mental hospitals and discharging of individuals with mental illnesses
- clients who present with acute symptoms constitute the largest segment of psych hospital census
- less serious conditions being treated on an outpatient basis
Primary prevention
Services aimed at reducing the incidence of mental disorders within the population
Secondary prevention
Interventions aimed at minimizing early symptoms of psychiatric illness and directed toward reducing the prevalence and duration of the illness
Tertiary prevention
Services aimed at reducing the residual defects that are associated with severe and persistent mental illness
What is recovery?
Recovery from mental health disorders and substance abuse disorders is a process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and strive to reach their full potential

Health
Overcoming or managing ones disease as well as living in a physically and emotionally healthy way
Home
A stable and safe place to live
Purpose
Meaningful daily activities, such as job, school, volunteerism, family caretaking, or creative endeavors, and the independence, income, and resources to participate in society
Community
Relationships and social networks that provide support, friendship, love and hope.
Guiding principles of recovery
Recovery:
- emerges from hope
- is person driven
- occurs via many pathways
- is holistic
- is supported by peers and allies
- is supported through relationship and social networks
- is culturally based and influenced
- is supported by addressing trauma
- involves individual, family, and community strengths and responsibility
- is based on respect
The tidal model
A mental health nursing recovery model that uses the power of metaphor to engage with the person in distress

The wellness recovery action plan (WRAP)
A structured system for monitoring uncomfortable and distressing symptoms and, through planned responses, reducing, modifying or eliminating those symptoms.
