Q

for a patient who has meningitis, his fingertips began to darken in colour and he starts to bleed from sites of needle insertion. why is this?

A
  • due to DIC - overactivation of the body’s clotting system, leading to the formation of blood clots in small blood vessels throughout the body; the initial infection of meningitis might’ve triggered this response
  • body’s clotting factors get depleted due to the excessive clot formation throughout the small blood vessels, the ability to form stable clots at the sites of needle insertion decreases.
