embolism Flashcards
1
Q
what is Fat Embolism Syndrome?
A
This occurs when fat globules from the bone marrow enter the bloodstream after a fracture, leading to respiratory distress, agitation, and even neurological symptoms. It’s more commonly associated with long bone fractures.
2
Q
How does it cause its pathological effects?
A
- fat globules enter small blood vessels in the lungs, causing mechanical obstruction
- affect the pulmonary vasculature, leading to increased pulmonary artery pressure and subsequent right heart strain
3
Q
complications - fat embolism
A
- respiratory distress -
- neurological complications - confusion, agitation
- right heart strain
