cellulitis Flashcards
1
Q
clinical effects of acute inflammation
A
- redness
- pain
- heat
- swelling
1
Q
causes of acute inflammation
A
- tissue damage
- microbial infection
- trauma
- insect bite
2
Q
what is characteristic cell type in acute inflammation? what do they do?
A
- The predominant cell of acute inflammation is the neutrophil.
- They are attracted to the site of injury by the presence of chemotaxins, the mediators released into the blood immediately after the insult.
3
Q
what is cellulitis?
A
- bacterial infection involving inner layers of skin
- caused by a bacteria
- most common : group A streptococcus + staphylococcus
4
Q
medication
A
- antibiotics
- if abscess present - surgical drainage
- pain relief
- steroids - speed recovery in those on antibiotics
5
Q
how does benzylpenicillin work?
A
- penicillin type antiobiotic
- weakens cell wall of bacteria
- allows holes in cell walss - kills off bacteria
6
Q
difference b/w COX 1 and COX 2 inhibitors
A
COX 1 - generates prostaglandins that are involved in the protection of gastrointestinal mucosa
COX 2 - generates prostaglandins that mediate inflammation and pain in sites throughout the body
