Pia matter and arachnoid, ventilation system, CSP most affected
Fall, winter
Follows infections, respiratory droplets, contaminated saliva, and respiratory secretions
Older and college age
Prisoners, military bases

Increased CSF production
Increased ICP
Classic triad
fever
Headache – throbbing
Stiff neck
s/sx
N/V
Photophobia
Altered LOC – drowsy, seizures
Meningococcus – skin rash, petechiae
positive Kernig’s sign
Resistance to leg extension
positive brudzinski sign
Neck flexion causes hip/knee flexion
Bacterial infection cause
more common, more fatal
Needs immediate antibiotics
Petechiae rash
Long-term – hearing loss, seizures, brain damage
Viral infection cause
milder form
No long-term effects
bacterial infection treatment
Aggressive. – IV
Ceftriaxone, Vancomyosin, acyclovir
Steroid therapy
Vaccines prophylaxis
