acute, ascending polyneuritis
Auto immune disorder
Myelin sheath is damaged by autoantibodies
etiology
Viral infection – most common
Bacterial infection
Post surgery
Flu vaccine
s/sx
initially – weakness/tingling in lower extremities
Uncoordinated movement
Numbness and decreased sensation
Loss of bowl/bladder control
Blurred vision
Difficulty breathing, swallowing, chewing
What type of pattern follows for symptoms of recovery?
acsending to descending
pharm
Decrease severity and accelerate recovery
Steroid therapy
High dose immunoglobulin therapy. – IV
is there a cure for Guillian barre?
No
prognosis
95% survive
75% completely recover
25 to 30% have residual weakness after three years
3% may suffer relapse of muscle weakness and tingling
