Meninges And Ventricular System Flashcards
What are the 3 layers of Meninges from superficial to deep
Dura Mater
Arachnoid
Pia mater
What are the five features of Dura mater
ODTSI
Outer most layer
Dense and fibrous - tough
Two layers (outer/inner)
Space between layers forms venous sinuses - only in some places
Inner layer forms Dural folds
What are dural folds
Formed from inner layer of dura mater
Seperate major devisions of the brain
Provide stability of the brain within cranium
What are the 3 dural folds
Falx cerebri
Falx cerebelli
Tentorium cerebelli
What is the Falx cerebri
Dural fold that separates the cerebral hemispheres in the median plane
What is the Falx cerebelli
Dural fold that separates the cerebellar hemispheres in the median plane
What is the Tentorium cerebelli
Dural fold that separates the cerebrum from the cerebellum in the horizontal (transverse) plane
What are the 3 features of Venous sinuses
Located where the two layers of dura mater seperate
Collecting veins
They collect venous blood (from brain) and old cerebrospinal fluid
What are the five features of the arachnoid layer
Layer beneath dura mater
Layer above the Pia mater
Does not extent into sulci (valleys)
Contains 2 features - subarachnoid space and arachnoid granulations
Contains blood vessels (within the subarachnoid space)
What is the subarachnoid space
Space between the arachnoid and Pia mater
Filled with cerebrospinal fluid
What are arachnoid granulations
They perforate the inner layer of dura mater
Transport “old” cerebrospinal fluid from subarachnoid space into venous sinus
What are the 4 features of Pia mater
Inner layer of meninges
Transparent and delicate
Blood vessels in arachnoid sit on top of Pia mater
Adheres to brain and follows gyri and extends into sulci
What are the 4 features of the ventricular system
Network of interconnected “spaces” (ventricles) within the brain
Filled with cerebrospinal fluid
Spaces lined with ependymal cells, which circulate cerebrospinal fluid with the beating of cilia
Cerebrospinal fluid is produced by the choroid plexus
Outline the components of the ventricular system
Lateral ventricles
Third ventricle
Cerebral aqueduct
Fourth ventricle
Central canal (spinal cord)
What are the features of the lateral ventricles
Two of them
One in each cerebral hemisphere
