Meninges and Dural Venous Sinuses Flashcards
Meningeal Spaces
Extradural space- Between skull and dura mater
Subdural space - between dura and arachnoid mater
Subarachnoid space - Between arachnoid and pia mater
Meninges
Dura Mater
Arachnoid Mater
Pia mater
Dura Mater
Periosteal layer - superficial layer - absent in vertebral column
Meningeal layer - deeper layer - continuous in vertebral column as dural sheath
Arachnoid mater
Arachnoid granulations (Cerebrospinal fluid into venous blood)
Pia mater
Deepest layer and snug to the gray matter of brains
Dural Septa
Forms double layer folds that insert into fissures
Limits movement of brain and support brain structure
Falx Cerebri - sickle shaped area within fissures
Tentorium cerebelli - inferior layer within fissures, weight support
Falx Cerebelli - under and connects to the dural sheath
Dural venous sinuses
Space between two layers of dura mater
Venous blood from veins of the rain and returned CSF from subarachnoid space
Superior sagittal sinus, Inferior sagittal sinus, straight sinus, confluence of sinuses, transfers sinus, occipital sinus, sigmoid sinus
Flow: Inferior- straight sinus, superior, occipital converge at confluence, moves to transverse and sigmoid passes jugular foramen into internal jugular vein.
Extradural Hemorrhage
Middle meningeal artery ruptures and creates extradural hematoma
Subdural hemorrhage
Cerebral vein rupture hematoma between dura and arachnoid
Subarachnoid Hemorrhage
CSF and vessels, arterial rupture and hematoma between Pia and arachnoid mater
