Cranial Nerves Flashcards
CN I
Olfactory nerve
Olfactory Receptor cells -> Cerebrum
Located in cribiform plate
Sensory (Smell)
CN II
Optic Nerve
Retine -> Occipital Lobe and visual cortex
Located in optic canal
Sensory (Vision)
CN III
Oculomotor Nerve
Midbrain origin
Located in superior orbital fissure
Motor (Eye movement)
Pupil constriction
CN IV
Trochlear Nerve
Midbrain Origin
Located in superior orbital fissure
Motor (Superior Oblique)
CN V
Trigeminal Nerve
V1- Opthalmic, Superior Orbital fissure, Sensory info from eye
V2- Maxillary, Foramen rotundum, sensory info from nose
V3- Mandibular, foramen ovale, chewing/sensory from tongue
CN VI
Abducens Nerve
Pons -> Muscle
Superior orbital fissure
Motor (Lateral Rectus)
CN VII
Facial Nerve
Pons to Pons
Temporal bone at acoustic meatus-> Chorda tympani branches off pass through middle ear to oral cavity to regulate taste. Rest leaves stylomastoid foramen.
5 Branches: Temporal, Zygomatic, Buccal, Mandibular, Cervical
Internal acoustic meatus
Both Motor and Sensory (Facial Expression , taste of anterior 2/3 of tongue)
CN VIII
Vestibulocochlear Nerve
Pons & medulla
Internal Acoustic Meatus
Sensory (hearing and balance) Mechanoreceptors
CN IX
Glossopharyngeal Nerve
Medulla
Jugular foramen
Both motor and sensory (taste and general sensory of posterior 1/3 tongue and pharynx)
CN X
Vagus Nerve
Medulla
Jugular Foramen
Motor: Muscle of Pharynx + Larynx
Parasympathetic: Thorax +Abdomen
Sensory: epiglottis+ Lower pharynx
