Sickle-shaped (more curved that regular red blood cells)
What can sickle cell anaemia cause in the body?
Tissue damage, pain, infection and even death (includes jaundice, stroke, leg ulcers, affected kidneys)
What disease are sickle cell sufferers are immune to?
Malaria
What sort of genetic condition is sickle cell anaemia?
Autosomal recessive disorder (not sex linked)
In recessive disorders, if both mother and father are carriers, what is the ratio of each child being affected, not affected and carrier?
1 affected, 1 unaffected and 2 carriers
In a recessive disorder, if the father is a carrier and a mother is a non-carrier, what is the ratio of each child being affected, not affected and a carrier?
2 carriers and 2 non-carriers
What are the main symptoms affected by cystic fibrosis?
sinuses, lungs, skin, liver, pancreas, reproductive organs and intestines
What does cystic fibrosis cause to the airway of the sufferer?
Thick mucus blocks airways, blood found in mucus and bacterial infection can develop in airway
What sort of genetic condition is cystic fibrosis?
Autosomal recessive
What is a common example of a common autosomal dominant genetic condition?
Achondroplasia
