Memory AO3 Flashcards

1
Q

limitation of Bahrick’s (1975) study of LTM duration (confounding variables)

A

Confounding variables. some p’s might stay in contact with classmates therefore isn’t testing LTM. if they meet frequently then doesn’t meet criteria of 15/48 years. low internal validity

Q

strength of Bahrick’s (1975) study of LTM duration

A

field exp. tested personal lives therefore memories are more meaningful. higher ecological validity

Q

limitation of Bahrick’s (1975) study of LTM duration (stimuli)

A

LTM better when recognising stimuli. p’s may still have memory but can’t retrieve it therefore low internal validity.

Q

limitation of Baddeley (1996) STM findings for encoding (STM)

A

for STM encoding :
64% recall semantically similar
71% semantically dissimilar which suggest may be some semantic coding in STM and not just accoustic.

Q

limitation of Baddeley (1996) findings for encoding

A

emp evidence. Frost (1972) showed LTM related to visual and semantic coding. Nelson + Rothbart (1972) acoustic coding in STM. Baddeley (1966) thought LTM mainly semantic. Low validity as many different findings.

Q

strength of MSM (Glanzer + Cunitz)

A

Emp evidence. Glanzer and Cunitz (1966) Serial Position recall. 1st words remembered (primacy effect) and last words (recency effect). supports MSM as info is held in the STM and LTM showing there are 2 stores.
