Self consciousness, self awareness, social self
What is dependent learning/memory
learning or memorizing things in different context
ex. a list of words that are different but have the same context
What is state dependent learning/memory
learning things in the same state during encoding
ex. bilingual learners tend to do better when tested in the same language as when they learned the material
What is a schema
Collection of general knowledge of events, situations, people, actions
I vs me. What is the social you?
I is the self as knower, and me is the self as known.
The social me is the way others see me based on my body, personality, or interactions with others
What is self-esteem? What does the subjective and evaluative portion mean?
a subjective, evaluative feeling about oneself and value to others
Subjective is the feeling rather than the knowledge itself
Evaluative is figuring out if it is positive or negative
The Idea of psychological needs and criticism
We need to have criticism and negative thoughts to be able to have self esteem. Cannot improve without it
Terror Management Theory
the idea that self esteem protects us against existential anxiety
Morality Salience
the reminder that we are going to die, leading to an increase in endorsement of beliefs that provide structure
What are the beliefs that provide structure for morality salience? Can self esteem reduce these beliefs?
Having lack of control leads a belief in a greater God
Existential anxiety leads a greater belief in science
Self esteem reduces these beliefs
Sociometer Theory
monitoring the quality of relationships, which motivates our behavior towards others.
done by looking for cues such as rejection or lack of interest.
Leary’s Argument
Behavior that maintains self-esteem used to decrease the likelihood of being avoided, ignored, or rejected
self-complexity

self reference effect
the self concept of ourselves helps us remember information
