Culture and Cognition Flashcards
Better than average effect
people tend to rate themselves as better than average in different domains
Weinstein - good things are more likely to happen to me
Meta analysis
QUANTITATIVE study used to systematically asses results of PREVIOUS research to derive conclusions to other research
Casual attribution
deciding what caused a specific behavior. did you cause it, or did the situation cause it?
self reserving attribution
tendency to attribute good outcomes to ourselves and blame others for the negative (that test was so hard because it was unfair vs that test was so easy because I studied well)
Correspondence bias - who shows it more?
tendency to overestimate personal characteristics and underestimate the role of the situation
Bias is present in Eastern cultures but stronger in Western cultures. Bias gets larger as we age (mainly Americans)
what does WEIRD stand for
Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic
Cultural differences in self concept and self task - what study was done to show this
European Americans choose unique segments more than common ones. East Asians choose common over unique. This was done by seeing who would choose a red pen over a black pen
Analytic vs Holistic thinking
analytic - considers objects individually and thinks of what stands out
Holistics - looks at the environment and considers things in larger contexts
Who has more holistic thinking?
East Asian, especially Japan recalls more background features than Americans
Muller-Lyer illusion. Who is more susceptible to this?
The illusion of lines being the same length, however appearing different due to the steepness of intersection or how it is drawn
Americans are more susceptible to this illusion
Gesalt Psych
Things are defined and influenced by their context/surroundings. One of the ideas that started the study of social environments
