Cognitive Dissonance vs Self Perception Flashcards
What is the “hot” view of humans
motivation. motive to reach a certain conclusions or reach positive affect. wanting to see ourselves in a positive light
What is the “cold” view of humans
cognitive. information processing, heuristics, memory, biases in the way we think
range effects
responses biased by the range of responses available
misinformation effect
new information about a situation can cause our memory to be faulty
what is a heuristic? availability heuristics?
heuristics are mental shortcuts that might create bias in our thinking.
availability heuristics is judging the frequency of something by how easily we can remember examples.
functional fixedness
the tendency to think in terms of traditional use of objects (a screwdriver is only used for screwing)
Cognitive Dissonance
adjusting our beliefs and behaviors to make ourselves seem consistent.
this is done when new feel uncomfortable about a conflict, having a different opinion than someone else
free choice paradigm
changing our attitudes on a topic after hearing other opinions about it
automatic vs controlled cognition
automatic - thinking that occurs out of awareness
controlled - deliberately sizing up and thinking of something
salience
a stiimuli that is unusual, which grabs our attention
representativeness heuristic
making judgements according to how well the event matches our expectations
anchoring and adjustment
we try to adjust our judgements, but our decisions are mainly based on things that we remember the most
counterfactual thinking
replaying events such that they turn out differently – especially when one minor change in events lead up to them making a difference
false consensus bias
tendency to see other people as similar to us
