Cognitive Dissonance and the Self Flashcards
Self perception theory
judging our own attitudes using the same processes that we used to judge other people’s attitudes
why is the self perception theory different from cognitive dissonance
cognitive dissonance has to do with changing our attitudes, whilst self perception is judging another’s attitudes based on what we know
injustification effect: what is it, and why do we do it?
the tendency of people to more likely engage in a behavior that contradicts their personally held beliefs when they are offered a smaller reward
traditionally viewed as hot, however seen as cold due to holding onto our beliefs
ex. will not take $200 just to change their mind
what do biases depend on?
biases depend on context and behavior
ex. if context can explain behavior, attribute behavior to context. if not, attribute behavior to person
are biases hot or cold?
can be both
ex. democrats and republicans rated their candidates contradictory statements and said their statements were less contradictory than the other side
could be due to hot - wanting to win, or cold - blindsighted because its their own opinion and statement
what were the fMRI evidences with the hot and cold debate?
there was higher brain activity in areas of emotional/motivational processing when judging the other side, proving a more hot situation than cold
counter attitudinal argument associated with cognitive dissonance
when doing a study that makes a participant think an action is uncomfortable due to hearing someone else talk about it, this created a state of discomfort for them which then motivates an attitude change (trying to make it positive)
